The countdown begins!

We are less than a week away from our arrival in Anchorage. Students have been working on and submitting their pre-trip projects. These are one-page fact sheets on different aspects of Alaska. As we visit the relevant places students will have a few minutes to tout their expertise and teach the group about their topic. The topics ranged from energy and transport in Alaska to the history of parks and people.

Below is an excerpt from of the fact sheet put together on Lituya Bay the site of the largest tsunami, by Brittany Adam.

"July 10, 1958

An 7.9 magnitude earthquake along the Fairweather fault shook roughly 40 million cubic yards of dirt and glacier off the Eastern wall of the Gilbert Inlet creating a monstrous wave 524m (1,742ft) tall.

This height was measured fom the highwater mark; the wave stripped trees and soil from the opposite headland. "
